If you follow the World Poker Team, or watch the World Series of Poker, you’ve probably noticed on more than one occasion, players like Phil Ivey and Daniel Negreanu listening to headphones during a game. In fact, according to his profile on the WPT website, “[Phil Ivey] likes his home with all of its gadgets and luxuries.”
Fact is, if you go to a land based casino, people who are playing poker are listening to satellite radio and MP3 players and the like, after all it isn’t blackjack and you won’t get your knees broken for having headphones on (like in the movie Casino).
Here are some items for the land-based poker player:
MP3 Players
If you’re like Elaine Benes from Seinfeld and don’t like taking part of the inane chatter around the table, you don’t have to pretend that you’re deaf. Just download your favorite tunes into a portable player and crank the volume.
iRiverClix with Shure E3c - headphones (White) Noise canceling earplugs
A popular little MP3 player that can play video, make voice recordings, view video and photos and has an FM player to boot. The noise canceling earphones work so well that you won't be able to notice what other players are saying.
Oakley Thump 2 (1GB)
Isn’t Oakley a maker of sunglasses? Yes they are and if you haven’t noticed they happen to make other things as well, including clothing and now a hybrid shades, music player.
This music player is built into the sunglasses and plays MP3, AAC, WMA, WMA DRM, and WAV tracks and has up to 1GB of storage with a USB 2.0 connection. Multi-hinged earbuds make them a good fit for most people. For serious poker players that like listening to tunes and don’t want other players seeing their tells.
Spion Pocket Lie Detector
I’m not sure what a casino’s take on this device would be and they might even politely ask you to turn it off. Nevertheless, if you could use it, it would be of great benefit.
Dubbed the DeFIBulator, the handy little device measures someone’s voice and determines if they are lying or not when you ask them a yes or no question. The bigger the liar, the noisier the beep.
The accuracy of the gadget is a little questionable though. An FBI lie detector isn’t even a 100 percent accurate and the DeFIBulator is no different. Extensive testing has revealed an accuracy rate of 65 percent. Think another player is bluffing? Use the DeFIBulator.
By the way, Spion doesn’t recommend that Law Enforcement Agencies invest in this device and use it for interrogations as they say it shouldn’t be used for serious purposes.
Pocket Size Counterfeit Money Detector
While the DeFIBulator is strictly a novelty item, the Counterfeit Money Detector is truly a useful piece of technology created in the land of cool gadgets, Japan.
Resembling a nail clipper or a flash drive, the detector uses ultraviolet light to read and measure magnetic code on currency the world over. Counterfeit money is becoming harder to detect after all.
