The bracelet of all bracelets is up for grabs at the Rio Hotel and Casino in Las Vegas. Jamie Gold is the defending champion and everyone will be looking to knock him off his perch. Here is all the latest news.
Day 1a - July 6, 2007
Day 1a ends.
- WPT Host Mike Sexton holding a 4-A of Clubs in the pocket went All-in pre-flop and was called Joe Awada, who was holding AD-JH. The flop revealed 3C-5H-7D while the turn was AH and river 7C. Sexton busted, adding to the list of high profile players who exited early on day 1a.
- The player known as "The Grinder" aka Michael Mizrachi, fared as well as Johnny Chan and Doyle Brunson busting out on Day 1a.
Chan busted under similar circumstances. He went All-in with AC-KC and the dealer flipped up 10C-6H-3D-10D-7H. His opponent had KH-10C.
Texas Dolly had bet on the pre-flop and when another player re-raised, Brunson did likewise and the player called. The flop came up AC-QD-6D and Brunson went All-in. Brunson with A-Q in the pocket wanted an A but didn't get one and when his opponent flipped over a pair of ladies, that was the end of his stint at the 2007 WSOP.
- In what may seem like a surprise to some, Johnny Chan and Doyle Brunson both busted just before the break for dinner.
- Greg Mueller busted.
On one hand with a flop of J-6-K all of Clubs, Maguire laid down $700, but another player's re-raise of $3000 was too much for Spiderman's blood.
- Tobey Maguire was also in the house and though he wasn't dressed as Spiderman, was trying not to get noticed. He was clad in a hoodie, sunglasses and a ball cap.
"I knew he meant me when he said 'the donkey in seat nine,' but he's just too stupid to count to 10," said the player who was actually sitting in 10. Davis later wiped the egg of his face and made it known that he wasn't talking about Johnny Chan. Who's the donkey now? FYI Ray Romano, star of Everybody Loves Raymond, is also playing at the WSOP.
Unfortunately for Davis, WSOP legend Johnny Chan was the player seated at the nine spot.
- In an effort to trash talk a player in seat 10, Raymond Davis miscounted and asked, "Just who is this donkey in seat nine?"
- World Series of Poker fixture Doyle Brunson was given a round of applause as he took his seat at the feature ESPN table.
- The World Series of Poker always attracts a number of celebrities and Janet Gretzky is among the notable names. Wayne Gretzky's wife achieved notoriety when she was involved in a gambling scandal involving then-Phoenix Coyotes assistant coach Rick Tocchet. Mrs. Great One won't catch any flak for gambling today.
- Blinds start off at $50/$100.
- Prior to the start of the 2007 World Series of Poker Phil Ivey is the odds-on at +10,000.
