Big gamble pays off for WPT winner
"It was 2 1/2 years ago that Joe Tehan made the decision to hop into his old Ford Taurus and drive across the country with $7,000, bound for the poker tables of the Strip. For his dad, it still hasn't sunk in.
'We're from upstate New York, Basil Tehan said. 'We're farm people. You know, we plant corn. We milk cows. If we see a penny on the ground, we pick it up. This out here - this is a different world.'
Joe Tehan's willingness to gamble paid off in a big way Thursday night, when he became the latest champion on the World Poker Tour, collecting the top prize of $1.03 million for winning the Mandalay Bay Poker Championship."

The Business of Poker: Part 2
"I want the World Series of Poker to be equated with Wimbledon. What that means is when people think of Wimbledon, they think the ultimate expression of tennis, globally. And, it's just a tournament. World Series of Poker – it's just a tournament, but it is the ultimate expression
WSOP freeroll of excellence in poker. I want to drive that perception home relentlessly. Again, we're already in the # 1 slot, but all that means is the only place we could potentially go is down."

The Business of Poker: Part 1
"Jeffrey Pollack has had an interesting path to where he is today. The Commissioner of the WSOP has seen the sports industry develop from the infancy of the digital information age, into the 800 lb gorilla of digital media it currently is.
Originally from the political world, Pollack founded a newspaper called the Sports Business Daily in 1994, which was the first daily trade publication for the sports business at a time when the industry was just coming into its own."

Book Review: 'Swimming With The DevilFish'
"[W]ritten by noted English author Des Wilson and to be released on June 16th ... is the first book I have seen that focuses on the European poker community and, in particular, the English world of poker. Wilson's task was a simple one in idea and concept: travel with the best in the English poker world and document their experiences as they navigate the globe parlaying their poker skills. In doing this (excellently, I may add), Wilson has given us perhaps the most revealing look at poker outside of the United States and given all readers the opportunity to learn about players that are largely ignored in America."

Consumer's Guide to Poker, PART 2 OF 3
"Being a smart shopper applies to your poker room. It's up to you, the consumer to shop around and learn what you need to know to determine whether you're getting your money's worth. First, learn how the house gets its money. Some places have a rake - an amount that the house takes out of every pot. Other places charge time - an amount taken every half hour from each player. Find out, before you sit down, exactly which method is used and how they use it."

Looking for Tells
"In addition to looking for them, make sure not to do them yourself. As we mentioned above, emotion is a key factor in giving away clues to more advanced poker players.
They may even fake certain emotions to make a beginner think that they are reading clues, when in fact they are being duped by professionals. In general though, opponent modeling is very important to developing a good poker strategy, so you should just be aware of these common poker tells: ..."

Book Review: How to Win the WSOP (or Not)
"If you're looking for a feel good story about an amateur who fulfills a lifelong dream of winning the World Series of Poker - this is not your book.
Pat Walsh is not the main character from 'Rounders' nor is he Chris Moneymaker. He's simply an author with a publisher willing to front him the money required to learn about poker. Why? Because reading about an underdog is more fun than reading about champions.
And Walsh is funny as hell. "

Big Slick, Playing It Right
"Ace King ... It's monster hand and you plan to get as much money out of everyone as you can.
Big Slick is called Big Slick for a reason. Yes its a monster drawing hand but it is a drawing hand all the same.
IF you hit either an Ace or a King on the flop then you've got yourself top pair with the best kicker. You might get lucky as is connected to get the nuts straight, if its suited you have got the table crippled if you draw that flush. It's worth noting A-K suited is 5th best starting hand but A-K off is 9th best.
But this is the thing - when you haven't seen any cards what have you got really ? An Ace high ... with a King kicker, just about any starting hand could beat it."
