"Puggy" Pearson Cashes Out
LAS VEGAS (AP) - Poker legend Walter Clyde "Puggy" Pearson, the man credited with creating the style of play made famous by the World Series of Poker, has died. He was 77.
... Pearson was known as the father of no-limit freeze out poker, the game Benny Binion turned into the World Series of Poker at his Horseshoe Club casino in downtown Las Vegas in 1970.

PokerStars set to float

"Data from the Poker Pages Industry Index, an industry standard when it comes to measuring the growth in Online Poker, has revealed that the game hasn't missed a beat as far as its soaring popularity is concerned.
The PPII for the first quarter of 2006 resides at 130, indicating a growth of 30 percent versus the same period last year - with total buy-in dollars just over $98 million. The growth over the last 12 months remains very strong, with the Buy-in Index for the period at 155, indicating growth of 55 percent over the previous 12-month period."

UA student plays with pros
"A marketing student at the UA won more than $36,000 playing poker in Las Vegas against professionals last weekend, and he has won more than $100,000 since August.
Justin Gaines, a marketing senior, ranked fourth place and won about $36,700 in a live poker tournament in Las Vegas last weekend and played against renowned poker professionals."

Binion's to WebCast Tournaments
"The Nevada-based American gambling group Binion's has announced plans to broadcast poker tournaments over the Internet.
The group's director of poker, Jim Delorto says the webcasts are being designed to present opportunities for ordinary players to get on-air and will be a valuable marketing tool for the Binion brand.
'You've got so many young people playing poker, and they all want to be on TV,' said Delorto. 'This is going to be a big draw.'"

Vic Ramdin Captures Title at Foxwoods
"The final table of the Foxwoods Poker Classic was setting up to be quite a battle. The six finalist had fought through a field of 431 player to have a chance of winning the first prize of $1,331,889. The remaining contestants were a mix of a pro player and internet poker guru, along with some unfamiliar faces that were not intimidated in the least bit. ...
That led to a heads up confrontation between internet poker guru Alex 'Yahtzem' Jacob and top poker pro Victor Ramdin. Jacob held the chip lead when they started heads up play. Shares Jump as Bills Lose Steam
[Proposed US anti-gambling legislation] lost some steam Thursday, as debate in the house judiciary committee for the first time showed real problems and complications with these bills, and cast a pall over their chances to progress into law. Apparently, normally a bill like this being debated in committee would have a second debate scheduled to continue discussion. At the close of the debate on these bills yesterday, no new debate was scheduled. With Congress in a short session, analysts say it is doubtful discussion on the bill will continue during this session - usually a bad sign for a piece of pending legislation.
This news sent gaming stocks soaring, as investors were driven back to the sector by the news. The leading stock of the online gaming sector, PartyGaming, gained over 10% on high trading volume, and stocks like 888 Holdings (up 11%), and SportingBet (up 9.5%) were also higher amidst heavy trading.
